about

“It happens sometimes that the Angel of Death, when he comes for a soul, sees that he has come too soon, that the man’s term of life is not yet expired; so he does not take the soul away, does not even show himself to it, but leaves the man one of the innumerable pair of eyes with which his body is covered. And then the man sees strange and new things, more than other men see and more than he himself sees with his natural eyes; and he also sees, not as men see but as the inhabitants of other worlds see: that things do not exist “necessarily”, but “freely”, that they are and at the same time are not, that they appear when they disappear and disappear when they appear”. Shestov, L. (1921). Revelations Of Death: On Dostoevsky and Tolstoy.

This elusive paragraph, by the aforementioned Ukrainian-Russian philosopher of existentialism Lev Isaakovitch Shestov, captured the imagination of electronic outfit Meteor Musik so vividly that they decided to build an entire sonic universe around it. What began as a series of recordings in the remote hills of the Belgian Ardennes during the spring of 2017, culminated in a full-length immersive 360° film that the trio accomplished together with visual and motion design artist Jaak De Digitale. The film, starring Dirk Hendrikx as a tormented cosmonaut, was specifically designed for full-dome projection in a planetarium setting. It was displayed on several occasions, accompanied with a live performance of the soundtrack. What you hear on this record are the original recordings which initiated the making of the film and which were later adapted for live performance.

In order to create the sonic foundations that evolved to be EON, the trio rented a cabin in the woods to build a studio with a very hands-on approach, using old analogue synthesizers and a straight-to-tape recording method. The output is a lively studio performance with no overdubs or post production. A collection of tactile sound sculptures, fluctuating in a breathing and constantly evolving sonic universe of hiss and flutter.

The story of “EON” takes us through the final moments of a stranded cosmonaut in the vastness of deep space. In compromised solitude, he faces his own mortality. Seeking solace in earthly memories, a new reality closes in as he struggles with an altering perception of time and space. Bizarre things start to unfold, as illustrated through hallucinogenic and immersive animations that climax in a transcendental optical apotheosis.
